S&S opening Canadian Scribner Imprint

February was full of surprises, and one of them came from Simon & Schuster, Canada. Just last week, S&S announced the creation of a Scribner Imprint. Kevin Hason, the president and publisher of S&S Canada, said in an interview with Publishing Perspectives that bringing this Imprint to the country will attract new voices and expand their exclusive list of authors.

One of the early plans of Scribner Canada is focused on a political nonfiction book. The Long Road Home by Deborah Thompson. Thompson’s work is mainly focused on the roots of black identities in North America. But, Scribner is also working on the release of Ian’s Reid We Spread.

Statement addressing Ukrania invasion from Book Arsenal Festival in Kyiv

This week the world has turned upside down this week, and as part of this month’s publishing news, we needed to talk about the Russian invasion of Ukraine. This country that is full of publishers, authors and editors is being attacked, and the industry has come forward to express its thoughts regarding this situation.

One of these statements comes from the Book Arsenal Festival in Kyiv. A fair that represents the peak of the literary year in Ukraine has shifted their focus from publishing to making sure all their families and staff remain safe during these uncertain times.

Further, it expresses their need for support from all nations since this conflict could quickly escalate and impact many generations.

Univ. of Mosul library reopens

The University of Mosul library reopened on February 19th, thanks to the UK’s donation of 20,000 books through Book Aid International. The library was initially destroyed by the Islamic State in 2014.

With sadness, the whole world received the news this week that Russia has started its attack on Ukraine. This situation has echoed all over the world, leaving many people concerned about the future. Different leaders have raised their voices to express their opinion regarding this invasion, including the president and CEO of Frankfurter Buchmesse book fair, Juergen Boos.

Boos, together with chief players of the fair, wrote a group message on February 24, addressing the situation in Ukraine. They all expressed their worry for colleagues in Ukraine and hope they survive the attacks from Russia.

Pearson sales up by 8%

This month we also had positive publishing news, including the confirmation of the financial performance of Pearson for 2021. The publisher confirmed sales increased, and they hope this trend continues in 2022.
